Meet our Music Teacher: Luis Rangel

Luis Rangel is a versatile and passionate music educator whose teaching is shaped by a rich blend of classical training, ensemble performance, and contemporary band experience. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Luis moved to Austin, Texas at the age of eight, where he continued developing his lifelong connection to music.

Luis began his musical journey early, starting violin lessons at age four. As his musical interests expanded, he transitioned to guitar at age twelve, which later became his primary area of study. His dedication led him to the Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied classical guitar performance under Adam Holzman for two years.

Education & Performance Experience

During his time at UT Austin, Luis was deeply involved in a wide range of ensembles. He performed with the University of Texas Undergraduate Guitar Quartet, earning 1st place at the University of Texas at Brownsville Ensemble Festival and Competition.

His ensemble experience also includes:

  • Jazz combos as a bassist

  • Concert Chorale as a tenor vocalist

  • Hispanic Caribbean Ensemble, performing on guitar, bass, conga, timbales, and voice

Outside of academia, Luis has spent over 12 years performing with bands, most notably the psych-rock shoegaze group Food Group and the All Rhythms Ensemble, a Latin American music group centered on traditional Cuban sones.

Teaching & Instruments

Luis teaches guitar, bass, and piano, bringing a flexible and student-centered approach to lessons. His background across classical, jazz, choral, and Latin music allows him to help students build strong fundamentals while also exploring creativity, rhythm, and musical expression. Luis enjoys working with students of all ages and skill levels, tailoring lessons to each student’s interests and goals.

Beyond Music

When he’s not teaching or performing, Luis enjoys cooking at home and playing video games, hobbies that help him recharge and stay creatively inspired.
